Useless Victoria Council

In case if you haven't heard, Victoria council has stunned the city once again with a brash proposal. After survey recipients responded to an overwhelming "no" to a councilor pay increase of 55%. Once council received the results, Ben Isitt suggests that council reduces it's services until they are paid higher. This is outlandish and the City of Victoria deserves a better council than these representatives.

Upcoming UK Election

Being a graduate of political science, I tend to annoy people with important election news. Regardless of your bias, or even if you do not vote at all, it is still important to be somewhat informed. Now would be a good time to get caught up with the upcoming United Kingdom election being held on December 12, 2019. Boris Johnson, leader of the Conservative party, called an election to push his final Brexit mandate. The Labour party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, is the opposition party looking to gain more seats and deliver a softer Brexit deal. Lastly, their is the Brexit party, led my Nigel Farage, simply representing those who are frustrated with the current state and strongest supporters for Brexit.

Social Media - 2 - way Communication

The  Social Media - 2 - way Communication powerpoint was eye opening to see how impactful social media has been has been on the way people communicate with one another. This significance is that there has never been a way to return feedback to the sender of a message before. Before, the sender could send out a message to people, but not receive feedback. Now, for the first time in history, feedback is being returned in the masses. As a result, the way we communicate will never be the same again.

An example of this new mean of communication is Twitter where everyone can send a message and give feedback. The unexpected consequence of everyone being being able to communicate with one another of Twitter is that there is a lot of chaos. If someone puts out a controversial comment then the feedback has the potential to be extremely negative which creates a poor atmosphere to communicate in. Likewise, the comment could receive feedback that breaks down into tangents, and finding constructive feedback becomes difficult. As there is arguably such a thing as too much feedback on Twitter, and it is important to mindful of how we communicate with one another going forward to ensure that we have the highest quality of communication.

A Vision of Students

Check out this video made by our CMNS 150 group addressing the realities students today face with digital media and school.

Check out my photo essay of the Vancouver Canucks vs Calgary Flames at Save-on-Foods Memorial Arena in Victoria, BC!

This is the first game the Canucks have ever played in Victoria; and local boy Jordie Benn playing for the Canucks and former Victoria Royals captain, Mathew Phillips, playing for the Flames.

First cigarettes, now mobile technology: Sherry Turkle analysis

Sherry Turkle’s analysis of mobile technology impacting everyone in a negative way is similar to when people started to realize that smoking cigarettes are bad for one’s health. Mobile technology and cigarettes have a lot in common. For instance, they are both extremely addictive and are accessed at inappropriate times; they both become incorporated into our daily lives and are missed when unused for too long; and neither are going away any time soon. Now, cigarettes may not negatively impact our solitude like mobile technology does, but cigarettes cause cancer and lung disease whereas mobile technology does not. Therefore, in addressing Sherry Turkle’s question about how will people respond to the use of mobile technology; if society is able to adopt moderation to reduce cigarette related health issues than there is a good chance that it may be possible for society to once again adopt moderation for mobile technology. When people realize solitude, like better health, is what they are after then the reduction of mobile technology will surely follow. There is no example of this good faith more visible then the fact that groups of people immediately book their campsite and race to escape their mobile technology together.
